User FAQ:

Q: What can I do to increase battery life?

Watch: The watch uses the least power in TIME mode.  You should always return the watch to TIME mode when not in use.  The watch uses the most power in SPED mode, COMM mode, and when the chrono is running.   The CHRON icon will be lit in TIME mode as reminder that the chrono running.

Foot Pod: Turn the foot pod off when not in use.  The foot pod will turn off automatically after 4 minutes of no activity.   The foot pod makes the same power down sound whether turned it off by pushing its button twice or when it shuts itself off.

Heart Strap:  You can verify that the heart strap is off by watching the Heart ICON in SPED mode.   It should disappear within 45 seconds of removing the strap.   When the strap is stored make sure that the contacts of the monitor are not contacting each other (directly or indirectly through a wet towel etc) when the strap is stored.

NetLink:  The NetLink does not require batteries.   We actually recommend that you remove batteries from the device if they are installed.   The NetLink gets its power from the PC.

Q: How can I improve the accuracy of my FS-1?

This answer assumes that you've already tried calibrating as described in the user manual.  If you haven't you may still want to try the CalVal Calculator described below.

It's important to make sure that the foot pod is firmly mounted in the center of your laces.  It shouldn't wobble or bounce when you run.  It can be made tighter by running the cord under one more lace crossing.

Have you tried the CalVal calculator?  If you are consistently off it should be easy to find the right value.
The CalVal calculator is at http://train.fitsense.com/running/CalValSetup.asp. You enter the actual distance, reported distance, and current calibration value - it will then calculate a new CalVal for you.

You can also manually tweak the Run CalVal a bit more. The rule of thumb is every number accounts for about 0.5% distance change. If the FS-1 is reading too short, lower the CalVal. If it reads too long, increase the CalVal.

A treadmill calibration isn't as accurate as a track calibration .  If possible, please calibrate on a track or road.

Please note that the average pace reported is based on the total time that your chrono is running, including times when you come to stop or are speeding up or slowing down.

Please also note that the pod displays your speed for the last few steps, so you can expect some variation if you cross a curb or sometimes even because you change your stride pattern when you look down at the watch.

Q: Why is my pace reported as unusually fast when I'm running slowly?

A: First of all, please make sure the foot pod is firmly attached to the top of your shoe in the center of the lace area. It shouldn't wobble or bounce when you run.

It's possible that the pod is having trouble when you run slower. If you run too slow the pod may think that you're walking and use a different algorithm (which reports faster speeds). This cut over point varies by individual and you may be on the edge of our design.

Please try the following to check for this: Take a run - see if the instantaneous pace/speed values make more sense when you run a bit faster and less sense as you slow down. It could be that the FS-1 won't work for your particular running style at slower speeds.

Q: Why was no distance recorded for my run?  Why wasn't distance or average pace displayed during my run?

You may have hit START before the foot pod was able to confirm to the watch that it had reset. In this case the watch can't report distance because it can't be sure it started at time zero, but it will report speed because it's an instantaneous (non-cumulative) value.

After resetting SPED make sure that 0.00 is displayed in the distance field before you hit start. This is the indication that the foot pod is ready to go and guarantees that distance will be recorded.

It is also possible that one of the batteries is weak which made it take longer to reset.   If you notice radio delays you may want to replace the watch battery. There is no LOW Battery warning in the watch.  Weak radio is an early warning sign of low battery.

Q: How do I know that my foot pod is communicating with my wrist unit?

A: Check for the foot icon in the lower left quadrant of the display while the watch is in SPED mode or COMM mode.
If the foot icon is not present:
1. Enter COMM mode.
2. Make sure that the foot unit is ON by holding the foot pod until you hear a single beep
3. If the foot pod is on and you still don't see the foot, your watch may need to "learn" the foot pod. While in COMM mode on the wrist, push the foot pod button 3 times (it will respond with 3 beeps), watch for the foot icon to appear.

Q: How do I know that my heart rate monitor is communicating with my wrist unit?

A: Check for the heart icon in the lower left quadrant of the display while the watch is in SPED mode or COMM mode.
If the heart icon is not present:
1. Enter COMM mode.
2. Make sure that the unit is ON by wetting the leads and wearing the strap as usual. The heart strap is turned on when it makes good contact with your skin.
3. If the heart strap is on and you still don't see the heart icon in COMM mode, your watch may need to "learn" the heart strap. Take off your heart strap and put is aside for 30 seconds. Then, enter COMM mode on the wrist and put the strap back on. Verify that the heart icon appears.

Q: Why is there sometimes a pause when I push the mode button?

A: You may notice a pause when waking the watch from its low power state. When the watch isn't busy it changes to TIME mode and then falls into a low power state to conserve battery power. The pause you noticed is the watch "waking up".

Q: What can I do to avoid interference when running with others who are also wearing FS-1 systems?

A: That's easy. Just make sure that you each have a unique COMM address. The address is shown in the upper right quadrant in COMM mode. If your numbers are different then you're all set.
To change the COMM address:
1. Make sure your foot pod is turned on. If you have a heart monitor, be sure that it's also on.
2. Go to COMM mode and hold the SET button until the number flashes.
3. Select a new address and wait for the foot and heart icons to reappear. These icons confirm that your address has been changed.
4. Push the SET button and you're ready to run!

Q: When I try to change my system COMM address, my foot pod and heart monitor icon(s) don't reappear.

A. It appears that your watch needs to learn your sensor(s). The watch is only authorized to change the address of sensors which it "owns".
Go back to COMM mode and follow the instructions in: Q: How do I verify that my foot pod is communicating with my wrist unit? or heart rate monitor?

Q: How do I make sure that chart data gets collected for a specific run?

Any time that you reset SPED to zeroes remember that future runs will NOT  be charted until you manually CLR CHRT or offload. Your FS-1 can store one chart at a time. After offloading or after manually clearing a chart, only your next workout will be charted.  The chart data remains stored in the FS-1 until you either offload with Netlink or manually clear the chart.

Resetting SPED to zeroes signals the FS-1 that your run is complete.  The reset stores your run to memory so that it can be offloaded and if the run was charted also tells the watch not to save any more chart data until the offload is complete or until the chart is cleared manually. So, to make sure that a specific run gets charted, offload or manually clear the chart before your run.

To clear the chart data manually: Enter SPED mode and reset SPED normally by holding the RESET button. Now hold the RESET button a second time. This time the clear menu will appear and the screen will read CLR CHRT. Hold down the RESET button until you return to the normal SPED display.

Any time that you reset SPED to zeroes remember that future runs will NOT be charted until you manually CLR CHRT or offload.

Q: How do I set my weight?

A. To set weight the foot pod must be TURNED ON. Turn the foot pod on by pushing its button once. One the watch enter SPED mode and make sure that the FOOT ICON is visible in the lower left of the watch display - this indicates that the foot unit is on and communicating. Then hold the SET button - WAIT may flash briefly and then change to WGHT. Enter your weight in pounds using the + and - buttons.
